The island’s historical past is truly intriguing, with the oldest traces of human existence being discovered in the gulf of Laganas, dating back to the Neolithic period. Fossilized bones dating back to the Paleolithic period were also discovered on the same beach.

Laganas Bay blessed with a number of gently shelving beaches of a particular fine sand, it is also the nesting area of some 80% of the Mediterranean’s population of the Loggerhead turtle “carreta – carreta “.

The WWF and the Greenpeace have called for the area to be declared a marine national park for the protection of this endangered species.
